X-Men Feed on Dinos’ Last- Second Turnovers
St. FX 86 Calgary 84 – A pair of late turnovers doom the Dinos, as Tyrell Edwards hits the winner with 3 seconds left for the X-Men. X were up 35-21 after an 18-0 run to end the 1st and start the 2nd quarter, but Thomas Cooper provides an offensive boost when he gets back in the game, while Mitch Ligertwood, and Matt Ellis are consistently getting to the ball on the boards. Lars Schleuter finds his scoring touch, and Calgary storms back for a 44-44 tie at the half. It was back and forth in the final 20 minutes, but a series of inside misses prevented Calgary from pulling away. Cooper was the game-high scorer with 22, Schleuter has 15, and Ellis doubled with 11 pts/10 boards/ 3 blocks. Edwards scored 21 for St. FX, who will play Western in the evening semi-finals, while Calgary goes to the consolation side against CBU on Friday at 3 pm Atlantic. Box Score
UPEI 84 Regina 79 – the Cougars fall just short, and might blame it on some loose play in the middle frames, where they are blasted 58-39 by the mercurial Panthers. 4 players in double figures for PEI, topped by 20 from Tyler Scott, and Dut Dut grabs 13 boards to go with 13 points. 30 points from Jonathan Tull for U of R, but the scoring isn’t there from his mates; Regina shoots just 35%. PEI shoots 22/26 from the line to only 12/14 for Regina. On Friday the Panthers play in one semi-final against Nipissing, while Regina meets Acadia in a consolation game at 1 pm Atlantic. Box Score

The Alberta Golden Bears are hosting the Golden Bear Invitational – on Friday and Saturday- (with a modified 4-team draw). Queen’s from the OUA join UNBC, Lethbridge and the hosts. Lethbridge will be without shooting guard, Rob Olsen, who is away doing an interview for Dentistry School, and they still have the injury bug, so may be missing a couple of big men as well.
- Good story in the Saskatoon Star-Phoenix about their freshman point guard Jauquin Bennett-Boire, who has looked like anything but a rookie in his pre-season games with the U of S. The young man was, apparently , looking to head to U.S. College, after playing high school in Abbotsford, then he had ‘committed’ to UBC early in the Summer, but changed his mind … by the sounds of it, his Mum’s cooking (she lives in Saskatoon) was a big factor !
- Not sure why Alex Igual, Regina’s point man, played limited minutes (16) vs UPEI , but UFV transfer Aaron McGowan came in and did a good job at that spot in the Spaniard’s absence.
